Yes. Makes the second game so much better if you spent a lot of time with the first one. mass effect 2???should i get ME1 1st??

thanx ... 1st ones a greatest hit right?
I believe so. I believe its around 20 - 30 dollars/euros.
I've done four seperate play throughs on Mass Effect. It's a great game. I'd say go for it so you can better appreciate the second game, as well as understand the history and characters better.

Yep $20 well spent
Absolutely. Bonus points and stats aside...I am about half way through ME2 and I am amazed at the number of references there are to the first game. Not just the big decisions that you made in the first game, but also, ''Joe Schmo'' from a side quest that asked you to retrieve something for him or talk to someone for him. A lot of those seemingly random encounters from side quests or insignificant characters from different missions will come back to either thank you or chew you out for what you did or didn't do for them. A few times, I had to really think back to where I met them. There's a lot of that, and you might get a few side quests out of it.

Also, I'm realizing that the understanding of the background info on the different races and their place and role in the society or the different organizations and governing bodies and locations of the Mass Effect universe is somewhat lost if you don't already carry that understanding from the first game. You can try to piece together info from the codex journal entries (wiki) and conversations, but the impact of finally going to certain locations or meeting certain people or going back to some places will not carry as much weight to you. Or you might not quite understand some people's or race's motivations.

And seeing that this is a very character driven story, the main characters that make reappearances may not bear the same connection to you if you don't already know where they came from or what you had been through with them. And you won't be able to appreciate how they have subtly or drastically changed. Not just the people that you had a ''relationship'' with, but the other characters that went through the first adventure with you.

If you really want to get the most out of the story and experience, you'll do yourself a favor and play the first one. To some reviewers, the amount of references to the first game was counted as a negative since those who hadn't played the first and were without any frame of reference would be missing out on a lot.
Sorry for that blog post, but I think I got my point across.
I would, yeah.
Yes. The story and characters of ME2 become more meaningful when you know who those characters are and what they're talking about.

no problem i dont know much about the game but i think ill pick up the 1st one thanx
definately, theres way to many references to ME1 to be able to truly grasp ME2, im not saying u'll be completely lost, just some conversations will leave you saying ''wtf?''
like everyone else has said, yes. and god the mass effect world is incredible lol.
Please use the stickied ME thread at the top of the board for ME discussions. Thanks!
